Prepare Your Quilt

How to Prepare your Quilt for Longarm Quilting

 Quilt Top

Please check that all your seams are sewn together well, including stitching 1/8th" from the edge around the quilt if your border is pieced so that seams do not open up when it is attached to the quilting frame. Press your patchwork well and make sure that it is as flat as possible. This will prevent any puckering of the fabric when quilting. Trim all loose threads from the front and back, and make sure that there are no pins left in it.

Pin a fabric scrap with a message on it to say which is the top of your quilt, and which is the top of your backing.

Do not baste your quilt.  The Quilt Fairy will do this as part of the quilting process.

Backing

Backing fabric needs to be at least 4 inches larger than the quilt top on each side and top and bottom.  There is no need to trim backing down to this size - all spare will be returned. Please ensure edges are straight & square as this is needed to load on the frame.

If you are joining fabric then please make the joining seam around 1/2 inch wide and press seam open. This will ensure that it is flatter on your finished quilt. Ensure your joins are horizontal as this makes the quilt sit better on the rollers.  If you need to have a vertical seam, the quilt may have to be loaded sideways.  Please contact me if you are uncertain about this. Selvedges should of course be removed.

Polycotton and sheets do not make good quilt backing.

Press backing fabric.

Wadding

Wadding also needs to be at least 4 inches larger than your quilt top on each side and top and bottom .  Alternatively you can order it here.
